Im having a problem with my setup that is driving me nuts. Some of the movies i watch sound bright and very nice dynamics , and some other movies sound low , and i will need to turn up the volume up to understand good dialogue volume. Im using ONKYO washington SR308 with jamo s608 tower fronts , jamo center and jamo rear. I sit about 1.5m away from rears and 2.1 away from fronts. Using HDMI for both video and audio and i still need to get a DOLBY HD / DTS HD bluray player, although at the moment im watching regular dts/dolby movies. Will upgrading to dts hd / dolby hd gives me much of an improvement ? I was watching finding nemo 3d last night (dolby) and the sound from all the speaker was amazing and bright and smooth with low-med volume. Then i watched The Descent (dolby) and the sound was kinda low with low-med volume, especially center speaker volume. Im tired of playing with center speaker volume through the receiper settings. Thanks.
First - learn how to properly position and align your speakers. They have a 'throw pattern' like a D-cell flashlight. The sound is very loud if it is pointing at you - but drops off sharply if you move to the side (or change the angle of the speaker). Second - toe-in your left/right speakers using a laser pointer on the sides to see where they are pointing. Some speaker systems work better with the left & right speakers focusing the sound 2 ft in front of the prime seat. Others (like mine) sound better focusing 2 ft behind the main seat. If your left/right speakers are over-whelming your center speaker - try adjusting the toe in. Third - (and most important) - level adjust your speakers. You do not sit in the center of a perfect circle of speakers. Your Onkyo receiver lets you add/subtract volume offset for the center and each rear to compensate for seating distances. Search for "home theater calibration" to learn how to properly adjust these offsets. Then - all your speakers should track up/down with the main volume control. You DO have to adjust the main volume differently for each movie, but you should not have to tweek the center volume all that much. Note: there are some famous examples where the center volume in the production studio was crap so the disks came out with the center volume wrong. Armageddon is one example. Hollywood is saving money by using over-sea production houses to master disks. Make a note of the studios behind the disks where the sound is poor and you may find a trend. Hope this helps.
Its certainly not uncommon to get some disparity in volume from movie to movie and from surround mode to surround mode. So your probably just experiencing the normal differences in these two changes in volume. Yep just turn it up, just be careful of not turning it up to loud and damaging your speakers or amplifier. Make sure of course you select the correct surround setting on the blu ray itself as well. Kevin 40 years high end audio video specialist
