We want something 1080p with a 120Hz refresh rate. 42-46" Is it better to buy the extended warranty on a slightly cheaper tv, or put that extra $300 onto a more expensive tv? For some things I always get the warranty, for others it's hard for me to choose because I've seen so many news reports on how much of a scam they are. Having the warranty has saved us money on some things, but cost us extra on others. Not sure what to do about a tv...

Spend the extra money on a better televison. The manufacturer's warranty is good enough. If something is wonky with the manufacture of the set you will normally see the results within a few weeks or months. Check out LG Toshiba Samsung. Results of my extensive research 18 months ago and backed up by Consumer Reports - best value quality LCD HD TVs. I settled on 42 inch LG, only 720p but we only use it for watching TV, HD Video On Demand from the provider. TV broadcasts are in 720p and will not change. LED/LCD over Plasma. LCD costs about 1/2 the electrical operating cost of a plasma. Some manufacturers will be dropping Plasma production in the future. The clues are seemingly everywhere. Pioneer, one of the foremost proponents of high-end plasma screens, just announced plans to leave the TV business altogether. Rumors currently abound that plasma giant LG is considering doing the same. Why? Plasma and "burn-in" have, rightly or wrongly, become somewhat synonymous with each other.
Having repaired tv's for over 15 years my money is on Sanyo. I love their tv's and have purchased them both glass and lcd for same period and have had no failures. That is remarkable! I have 4 lcd's and three glass Sanyo's. Extended warranties are ok if the item is a high ticket item and the manf warranty is only 1 year labor. Be careful some stores offer warranties that run parallel to original and try to tell you it does not. So for instance if you buy an extra 2 years the first year may run paralell with the original year and be pretty much worthless. Get it in writing befor parting with your money. Also check online the reputation of the extended warranty company and see how many complaints there are. Also see where their servicenters are. If you live in N.Y. and servicenter is in Oklahoma..... get it?
No buddy Toshiba is good! Toshiba is robust. Go for Toshiba 32 inch pb20(it supports about 28 video formats via USB) cheap and best compare to all other lcd's.
I would recommend pay more on good quality tv. Good quality brand for LCD tv that I would recommend is Smasung or Sony.
