Your mate has been caught by one of the oldest dirt bike scams in the world... WHY DID HE BUY IT pennsylvania THE FIRST PLACE! the bike is 8 years old it has been:- RACED JUMPED REBUILT these three little words.. If it was raced was it ever stripped after each race and rebuilt ( I doubt it) if it was jumped was the frame checked and the bike checked for distortion after every session ( I doubt it) Why was it rebuilt ( because it was knackered) Why did the "DUDE" sell it... Well he had ragged the bike to death it was no longer performing and had already bought a replacement bike, so he needed to shift it quick so he might bung a new piston and rings on the bike in the hope that it would start and so that he could explain the huge amount of blue gasket sealant on a "rebuild" Your "buddy" comes along and see's what he thinks is a bargain and the SH!T glitters like gold and he gets caught up. On parting with his cash the guy says " No refunds- no warranty" he takes it out for a ride and BANG!!! sorry he's been SUCKERED!!!
Needs a new top end. 2 strokes do not have oil rings by the way. Hope the piston didn't melt down into the lower end New top end consist of machine barrel (if it is thick enough still) $55 new piston and rings $125 Gasket set $35 head resurfaced and checked for cracks $35 labor is easy enough. Do it in your living room on the coffee table
My guess the rings are going bad, I had the same problem, there's two rings plus a ring for oil, so it's possible one of the two rings broke apart, it could also be a bearing judging by the rattle noise. Only way to know is to remove the top end, it's a very easy job and cheap if you do it yourself, Best luck!
Sounds like something went in the motor. Did you check your oil level?
Sounds to me like your friend blew it up. take it to the dealer and let them fix it. asking this question out here tells me that you or your friend do not know a thing about fixing the bike.
