I am 24 female and live at home. I graduated a year and a half ago, and got just a decent job (40k a yr) 8 months ago. Ive paid off all credit card debt and I have saved up 12k in this 8 months. Now I just have student loans debt, but nothing huge, about 15k left. I sort of want to stay home for another 8 months-12 mo to pay off all student loans. But then I think its pretty ridiculous to be 25+ and living at home. I do pay 400 a month here, but for 1 bedroom rent Id be paying 700 to 800 just for rent so I am getting off very very easy here. What are your opinions in what I should do??? If I had a room mate then I could move out and still save a lot but room mates are not an option. My friends live at home not ready to move out, have kids of their own, or are still students. If I moved out I would def live alone and would have about 1000 less a month than now. But I have to be my own person too, Im an adult. I yearn to start my life and have my own place, but yearn to be debt free quicker as well! What to do???
I answered your other question, I will say the same: I'd say stay home. As long as you fully support yourself and share household expenses I don't see anything pathetic or ridiculous about it, MANY families are multi-generational homes. Very common. In my opinion it's only ridiculous for a grown adult to be living at home when they're not working/not contributing (through laziness) or if they're irresponsible, like popping out kids, while their mommy pays for them all. I'd say stay home for a year or even 2, pay off a lot of debt and save. If you can save 12k in 8 months while paying off cc debt, you can easily do another 15k in a 18 mo while still paying off most of the balance on the loans. Use it for a down payment on a condo, or small house. Why waste in rent if you have all the savings. Mortgage, taxes, and fees together are often less than you'd pay in rent in this market! Owning is not for everyone, so just keep this in the back of your head as an option. But again, I don't think your situation is pathetic at all, you're earning your keep.
I'd stay for the additional 8-12 months assuming your mom is pennsylvania with it, and you get along OK. People a lot older than you live at home. You got your education, got a good job, and sound like you're doing well handling your finances. Going out on your own at some point is good, but 26 or 25 doesn't make much difference, and it'll let you save up even more.
Pay off the loans, then move out. As long as you're not at odds with your parents, and they are accepting of your lifestyle/give you freedom, why move out when you don't have to. Remember more $$$ = more fun. If you don't have ANY loans and all you have is a mortgage, you will be able to 1) get a bigger house, and 2) have more disposable income. Good luck!
I think u should stay for just another 8 months n pay off all ur debt n then move on... :)
I really think you should pay your student loans first. yes being 25+ and loving at home is pretty bad but if you think rationally, you should be financially awesome first :)
Pay everything off then MOVE OUT ASAP!
Move out!! Definitely!
