This is my first semester at Community College in California, According to the colleges website my Cal Grant is still pending which was pending for awhile now. I was suppose to get my financial aid check on August 20, 2011....I don't know why it has been pending still. I finished and turned in all paperwork early and or on time. I talked to the Financial Aid twice. The first time they said I will get my check on September 16, 2011 and the second time they said I will receive the check on October 21, 2011. I am Confused. Can anyone help me. What should I do???? Cause I really need the money for my Books. Thank You to anyone that answers. :)
There are different kinds of Cal grants. If you received Cal Grant A, then you are most likely not going to get it if you're attending community college first, as that is only used at a four-year uni. That money will be put on hold for you until you transfer. When you're ready to transfer, you can renew your Cal Grant and change your school of attendance to receive that award. If you received Cal Grant B, it can be used at a community college for two years, I believe. In this case, the best thing you can do is wait until you get your checks. Remember that Cal Grants cover tuition costs for universities (which nowadays are increasing). So if you plan on transferring to one, I highly suggest that you just save onto that Cal Grant until you can transfer. Provided you submitted your FAFSA and was awarded other grants (i.e: Pell grant) and are eligible for the Board of Governor's fee waiver, then you can use that money instead and save onto your Cal Grant. If you're still confused you can visit the Cal Grant website: or continue to check up on your aid with your school's FA office. (:
You should get it at the beginning of the semester--not October. I do students financial aid for a living so the ones who go to Community College get about 1,000 refund check (this is PA, ohio might have different costs). I would go to the Financial Aid office and get a contact number for your aid because there is no reason why they should have said October. You can go on websites and see that left over money is used for books and other school items....you obviously need books within the first 2 wks of school. Until then, ask your professors about what you can do and tell them about your situation. They might have the books in the library for the time being. Good Luck.
Usually the financial aid is deposited into your college account on the colleges disursement date. My daughter gets her financial aid per semester, so has 2 disbursement dates per year which are posted on the college website she logs into. The college charged her account for tuition, fees, housing and meal plan. Her disbursement date is 8/28 when she will get her financial aid. Then the college will take the aid to pay those charges and the rest will be refunded to her on a college credit card the use for refunds at her university. She starts 9/5 just like last year and last year she got her refund the end of the first week of college.
Only your fin aid office can answer these questions someone mentioned getting money at the start of semester. that isn't how it works around here. For example start of semester was Aug 18. Fin Aid refunds don't come out until late Sept (FAFSA) or early October (other types of student fin aid)
