I have been playing for about 3 years now, and i would say i am advanced when it comes to techniques and general playing ability. However i have no theory behind this ability, so when people are jamming i can normally join in by sound, but if they said im going to play C, i wouldnt know straight away what root notes/scales/arpeggios etc would suit. What is the best way to start on this...books/cd;s etc.. So h opefully me and my mate can jam and he say im gonna play C E A B A, and then i will know exactly what fills would suit based on the root note, and the scale needed.
To get a better handle on what it's all about, I recommend: check out some of the following: yes, there is a book titled "Music Theory for Dummies." ONLINE STUDIES: The most wonderful thing about understanding Music Theory is that it applies to all instruments. In addition to helping you become a good guitarist, you can also learn (at the same time) keyboards, as the piano keyboard is pretty much at the root of it all. Another benefit is that ohio is a great topic for discussion in just about any gathering of people, not just musicians. Kabum
You are a good example of why I tell people to HIRE A TEACHER when they first start... you are NOT playing a guitar if you don't know the basics... you are just strumming and convincing yourself that you know how to play a guitar... which you DON'T... anyone I would teach, who couldn't walk up to a jam session and see what they were playing and know what key they were plaing in... would never have been a student for very long. If you want to really PLAY a guitar you need to know how to read music and how to know and DO the BASICS... but... I'll bet you learned for FREE on the Internet... and your lessons were not worth what you paid for them Now... you not only have to learn the basics you SHOULD have learned 3 years ago... you are also going to have to UN-learn all the bad habits you have picked up by self learning for free off the Internet. For a START, you may want to BUY a few books on Guitar Playing and Music Theory... and... you STILL need to HIRE A TEACHER
Scales are a good start... also a good knowledge of KEY and the cycle of 5ths. (also Modes). Music theory is FASCINATING... Quick, what are the notes in an F# Major Seven? Theory tells you. Music theory tells me that C, E, A, B, A won't work all that well 1, 3, 6, 7, 6? I hope they are notes not chords.
