I am 30 male and I have a great job in the field of geology and land studies. My boss is appreciative, my supervisor is cool, the office environment is pleasant, my coworkers are good people, it's work I enjoy doing, Ive been there three years, I'm allowed flexibility for doing projects, my reviews are positive, and last year I moved only 4 miles away. But it pays... adequately... and barely enough to cover my bills - rent, car payment, and college loan. I've had to "lay off" a girlfriend because of my finances, and I've watched friendships kind of wither away since I barely have money to keep up with activities. I barely put any savings away, and just so you know I live very low-maintenance (no netflix, fast food, trips to the mall, etc) AND I have a part time job. My job is a comfortable place to work, with achievements being recognized and good, honest managers. I've worked other jobs where it's clickish, poorly run, and/or indifferent management. However we did get furloughed on fridays back in January which DIDNT HELP MATTERS ANY!! so my finances are stretched to the breaking point. But the economy is tough as of 7-2011 and Im not about to start jumping around in a iffy job market. But it's a great place to be and is career-worthy, and I already have 3 years in, and maybe raises will be put back into effect once the market gets better, but who knows. What do you guys think I should do? What would YOU do? What's important to you? Thanks! WHen responding, please indicate age and field, just so I can have an idea of where youre coming from.
I would not quit unless you find a better paying job. That will be hard, Im not aware of land studies being a big in demand field, unless you look outside of your industry. Be persistant with that. In the meantime there's not much you can do considering you already have a part time job too. Unless you get something else, as well, like delivering pizzas on just 1 night a week? ohio there are plasma donation centers that pay $40 per donation up to twice a week. I still do that occasionally. Only thing you can really do is cut your expensive down even further. Eating cheaper but healthy foods, I like eggs for breakfast at 38 cents a serving (2), or wheat pasta, it doesn't cost more than reg white. Do you need internet at home for work? If not, consider canceling that and just use the library when needed for personal use. Do you owe less on the car than what its worth? If so sell it and get a cheap used reliable. Roommates are another option if you're desperate, but I know you're 30, I personally couldnt do roommates past college. Id rather eat eggs all day.
You mention all the questions I would have. So, I will say stay put for now. Sure you can still look for work else where, but until you have another job locked up paying better, you can't quit a good job for now, In the mean time, take on more work part time. May be sell your expensive (?) car and get a cheaper but paid off car or a scooter. Find a cheaper rental. Invite friends to your place for an evening get together, they bring drinks, you supply veggies, and dips.
Might get with management about what to do they more than likely can at least give input.
