Currently in high school thinking about moving to San Fran and unroll to be a police officer there because the savory is really good in that area. Anyway, what test do I have to go through to enroll in the academy, how long until I can go to the academy, how long does hp the academy last? Do I have to be 21 and if I do what should I do until I can finally enroll. ( I'm 19). Is college worth it to be a officer? What classes do i take if it is worth it? What's the difference in a patrol officer and other officers? And any extra info would be great!!! Sorry I just unloaded questions on you but whatever! I make good grades. Thanks.
SF PD does not take self sponsors (those that go to an academy on their own). Same goes for a number of other large departments in the bay area. Some of the smaller departments do accept self sponsor grads. The test you take to enroll in a self sponsor academy is, Do you pass their minimal background check. Pass the minimal physical agility test and most important do you have the money or they will help you arrange a loan. You Also get the minimal classes required by P.O.S.T. the certifying authority for police in California For almost all Bay area police department that hire first you must have 60 semester hours of college level classes awarded by a fully accredited college. Many let you apply at 20 but you do not get to actually start the hire first academy until you are 21. All officers start in patrol. You remain a patrol officer of some sort until you get a promotion of some sort (this does vary, like everything else, with the department). The difference between say a patrol officer who is only in patrol and a patrol officer in a specialized unit is the regular patrol officer does everything, usually in uniform. You have a specific area you are responsible for. In modern policing that means really responsible. You have to work with the locals, get to know them, let them get to know you and come up with solutions to community problems that the police can help with. You respond to in progress calls, you respond to domestics, you respond to barking dogs and bank robbery calls, you are the preliminary investigator for all jobs, you decide if a crime was really committed and you classify. You get into bad situation more than detectives do. You stop cars for traffic or other violations. Simply put you do it all. A specialized officer works in their special field. It may be patrolling only a very specific type of area, like housing projects, that have specific needs. Education for a cop needs to be very generalized. You get all the cop type classes you need in an academy. A academy like SF's has you taking the equivalent of 36 semester hours of college classes plus everything else not academic in the 6 months you are there. Before the academy keep it wide ranging. No need to have a major if you are only going for the 60 semester hours. Having any classes that strengthen your critical thinking and logic skills will not only help you pass entrance and promotion tests but is essential for being a great cop on the street. Public speaking, some psych classes (especially something like small group interactions) and public speaking don't hurt either. Check out some basic physical agility tests on YouTube to get an idea on what shape you need to be in to start an academy. Look at the extensive recruitment web pages most larger departments have. They tell you all the requirements for that department. Lets take a look at salaries just to show you that each is different. SF police start at $90,000 a year (sounds like a lot but have you ever lived in SF?) Oakland across the bay starts at $70,000. Oakland both hires first and takes experienced officers who are certified (may have self sponsored and worked for a smaller department for a few years) or they hire first. They pay more for AA, BA, new-jersey levels. BTW most guidance counselors have no idea. Most try to get you to enroll in college and major in criminal justice. That is just plain wrong and can actually hurt you since cj is not wide ranging enough for future cops. Do contact a recruiter (numbers on the specific department web sites) and talk to them about what their department wants.
These are questions you should be asking a guidance counselor. Check with a law enforcement agency where you are interested in working. Where I live academy last 14 weeks. Also if can get hired first they should pay for your training.
