I am 21 years young. I am a boiler operator at International Paper making 23.00/hr. I went straight to work after hight school. I now feel as if i am missing an important step in life, college. Not only college but to go to medical school as well. I know i can accomplish this schooling, and would love the challenge and excitement of being a Trauma Surgeon. Here is the (more details) part..... I am getting married this coming April, we have all the normal household bills plus a few extra... couches, motorcycle, credit cards, my fiance's vehicle etc... She makes 12.00/hr....we total about 5000.00 per month....and we somehow have managed our money poorly and the result is 75.00 extra every week. Now that you have the details the question is... I need to know if it is possible to "live" off of student loans and especially for 8 years. I don't want to quit this great job that i do have when so many people wish they had even 8.00/hr and end up running out of money to borrow to pay for the things WE need to take care of in our household. Another crazy curve ball.....she has wanted to get an associate certificate for a Surgical Technician..... how crazy would it be to drop the jobs that we have to follow dreams that could hurt us financially. we HAVE to mantain our household bills, other things can go...i know this, but is it possible. I would love to hear from someones way of life or how they may have gone through a similar situation. All friends and family think I am crazy and that I should focus on just living a normal life with a our wedding on the way??? My fiance has my support and she has mine buuuut can you really live on love buy on time?????
If you try to live off student loans for the 12 years it will take you really, really have to be sure you will not fail. Because if you fail to get into medical school (and 2/3 who try do fail) and then fail medical school (25% do) then you have a debt you will be unlikely to be able to pay and which cannot be discharged in BK. And if you two have a child before you finish your residency, you will totally drown in debt. Also note you will not be able to maintain your lifestyle. You will have to drop back to a college student lifestyle which may mean living in a dorm room, no vehicles until you are a senior and so on. There is a reason why going to work after high school is considered a trap. You get used to having a little bit of money and it is super hard to give it up. Knowing all this do you think you can handle it. If you do then give it a shot. And do go to your state university as an in state student to keep your cost to a same level. Of go to a community college for 2 years then transfer to a university for the rest of your pre-med program. To make some money as an undergrad and especially since you plan to be a trauma surgeon you should, as an undergrad, go to a community college 3 nights a week for a semester and get trained as an Emergency Medical Technician. When you work on an ambulance crew (which you can do while going to school) you will get the sort of clinical experience that medical schools love and you will double your chances of getting into medical school And make a few bucks. And if you do make it into trauma surgery, you will pay of the lopans within 10 years.
With a heavy heart, I say that you have to choose. As long as each of you has the other's support, I recommend that you put your wife through the surgical technician program. The trauma surgeon route means 12 years of college loans. BS + new-jersey + residency. You'll both drown. You'll be 33.
