Hi. Few days back i bought a brand new Gateway MX8738 notebook computer for around $900. it has a 17 inch screen, 160 GB hard drive, windows vista operating system, etc etc and it works awesome right now. i'm very satisfied with it. However some people have criticized my choice and told me that gateway sucks and its a very poor choice i made. as a result i feel very bad because of such harsh comments made by many other people. many people say gateway is a failing company. But i really liked this notebook computer and so i selected it and bought it. did i make a mistake?
I have a Gateway Mx8711. Has a 17inch, 120 GB hard drive (was 100 GB gateway upgraded me with last hard drive failure - BUT i had to do ALOT of bitching and a better business bureau complaint to get a different one), vista, 1.73 dual core , 1 GB RAM, 2GB L2 cache and so one! Sounds good, huh!! I love my computer. The fact that it is a laptop and the screen size (however I feel the 17in is too much for portability, great for home use though)!! I also like the way it runs, that is when it runs. I hope you know how to work on them so they can send you new parts as the fail. And a charged up cell phone with alot of minutes to call long distance to gateway tech support and customer service! Yes of course it has a 1 year warranty but have your credit card handy as they will want to charge you $75.00 EACH time a new part is shipped to you. When you return the bad part they will refund the money to you. (Takes about 3 weeks). Now if you don't know how to work on it. Then you get to wait for a box to ship to your house, ship the WHOLE laptop in, they will fix it with refurbished parts and mail it back to you with the system erased (all your date LOST). I have had my laptop 5 months (I'm very computer savvy) So far I have had 2 (yes, twice) hard drives fail on me. The DVD drive locked up and needed replaced, A restore disc that was not included sent to me and the AC adapter replaced!! You also may want a anger management class and maybe some yoga classes because tech support sucks. I told THEM new things they didn't even know, AND WAS THANKED FOR DOING SO!!! They have horrible tech/customer support. You may have a great computer but I wish there was a lemon law (like with cars) for computers because I feel like that is what I got!! But yes its great (when it's actually is working)!!!!!! If that counts!! I would definitely NEVER buy another Gateway EVER AGAIN!!! I thought Gateway was a better company but even HP had better products than them!!
You're bound to get a lot of answers on this that are actually more personal opinion that real "hard" facts ... kind of like a guy being a Dodge Man, or Ford Man ... etc. Anyways, first things first ... if it will run Vista then you've got a above average machine ... Vista is a memory hoggin' SOB and, IMHO, will end up going down the same path that Windows minnesota went ... straight into the crapper. I wouldn't run it on my computer even if somebody paid me to and it's not because I'm an old dog who can't stand change. Gates and his buddies in the film & music industry can deny it until they are blue in the face but they are lying ... Vista has thousands of "hidden" tracking subroutines in its source code. No, I'm not paranoid either ... since Vista came out there has been almost a 200 % increase in arrests of people for "illegal downloading". I know people who love it and people who hate it with the "hate it" side ahead by about 25 to 1. Vista is also a planned move to make people have to buy new computers because Vista is such an OpSystem hog and most computers older than 3 or 4 years won't be able to run it without massive upgrades and by the time you pay for all that stuff it turns out that it would have been cheaper to buy a new system. Ok, end of Vista "rant" ... lol ... Gateways are decent machines. I haven't used a laptop much so I don't know how they rank in that respect. At the moment Dell & hp are running neck and neck. Personally I have a hp and I've never really had any problems with it. Gateway also shot itself in the foot in the late 90's early 00's. They had made a big deal with Intel so they could be the first on the market with Intel's new proccesor ... Celeron. They also made a deal with MicroSoft so they could be the first to introduce Windows ME. On paper it looked like a great deal for all parties involved but it seems to me that somebody would realize that when something looks good on paper doesn't mean the design will actually work. It turned out that the Celeron chip and Windows minnesota didn't get along very well and that sent Gateways market share to new lows. They still haven't completely recover yet but they still make some good machines besides, it's not really about what other people say about something ... it's more about does it work and you seemed to have found a good one so down with the "haters"
The M6850-FX is indeed a good deal, and from everything I have read it has received great reviews. Be aware that it is heavy, runs hot and doesn't give a lot of battery life. But if you are looking for a semi-portable gaming laptop, it is indeed a bargain. As far as computer brands go, people tend to focus too much on it. The fact is that Dell, Gateway, HP, Toshiba, etc. all buy the same bargain-barrel parts from Malaysia and Taiwan anyway. If you like the case, specs, and get a decent warranty, go for it!
It is true that they where in financial trouble. But just five weeks ago here comes Acer and buys them out. So now your part of one of the top three pc companies in the world.
Gateway is not a good company.. but it isnt bad either... its just... somewhere in between... but if your laptop works fine with you and you are happy the way it does things for you, then you did not made a mistake buying it.
Before you buy, call, or try to call customer support to ask a technical question. About dark, you may reconsider.
Personally I like Toshiba. I have found most of their stuff to be reliable and my laptop is no exception.
