Everything was going great until a year ago when my husband lost his job. We had consolidated our debt onto a line of credit at 26k. We were making payments and then boom, he lost his job. At that point, we had to decide how we were going to manage our debt and bills. He got unemployment while trying to find a new job, and I was working while 6 mo. pregnant. I had the baby, and didn't get paid for maternity leave so, we were left unable to pay on this line of credit. (We do have some other credit bills that are up to date ex. car, student loan). So, after months of not paying, the company offered a 0% interest, 5 year plan. We cut corners, and got lucky and had a relative watch our son. He got a job making 50% less than his old job, but it is a job. He took on extra side jobs in the afternoons. We started making payments again. Then, our relative moved, leaving us with an enmormous child care bill. Neither of us can stay home because of the other bills that we owe, but once again we're faced with the inability to pay on this line of credit. Our interest rate went back up, our minimum payment did too, and we can't pay it at all. Our ultimate goal is to buy a house, and now, this has crushed our dreams and hopes for the future. We don't know what to do. We're in our late 20's, live in indiana and are scared to death we'll never have a home for our family. Is there any hope for us? For our family? We have cut our corners (no cable etc.), we've listented to Dave Ramsey and sold everything but the kitchen sink..we're just stuck on this one bill that's 26k! :(
Why on earth would you be "scared to death" you'll never have a home for your family? That's strange that you'd be so frightened over something like that and express it so strongly. Not everyone owns a home, and many many people over the years have rented so I don't understand the fright. And especially because of the present economy, you're in the same boat as many many other people. Since that is so, why not get with them and see what they're doing and how they are handling things. To avoid bankruptcy the only things you can do is get more work (maybe since you have a young one you can watch at least one other person's child while you work from the internet and sell avon or something. As for your husband two jobs would be fine, one good one and one evening or short term job or him doing odd jobs in the neighborhood. If you're brought into court to pay then try to set up a payment schedule, that's the best you can do. Avoid bankruptcy by going thru consumer credit counseling. The CCC always looks better than a bankruptcy on your credit report as it shows you are responsible and are attempting to pay off your bills.
